Cumbria Flood Appeal exceeds £600k in four days

AN appeal to help people affected by devastating floods in Cumbria has raised more than £600,000 in just four days.

Generous individuals and businesses have rallied together and donated what they can to the Cumbria Flood Appeal 2015.

The fund is being run by the Cumbria Community Foundation and has now doubled its target to £2m.

Grants would help flood victims carry out repairs on their homes, replace furniture and clean up the damage.

Andy Beeforth, chief executive of Cumbria Community Foundation, said: “We are still in the eye of the storm, but we know that it appears the flooding is worse than in 2009 in some areas of the county.

"People will need financial help to rebuild and we want to have the means to do that.

“It is difficult to assess the scale of the need, but we know that the flooding will cause significant financial hardship and emotional distress.

"We will be convening meetings with the major voluntary groups involved in the recovery and also with major providers of social housing to assess the impact on their tenants.”
