THOUSANDS of people turned out to enjoy a Lake District show which celebrates country life.

Visitors flocked to Coniston Country Fair today (Sunday) on the shores of Coniston Water.

The Ridgeside Falconry birds of prey display and handling was a hit with the crowd, as was the terrier racing.

There were strong exhibit numbers among the classes for whippets, lurchers, terriers, beagles and foxhounds.

Farming and craft was also well represented with Herdwick sheep, sheepdogs and traditional walking sticks.

Tyke Benson, 11, and his family had a great day with their Herdwick sheep. The family from Fell Foot Farm, Little Langdale, won the overall sheep championship and Tyke won second and third place rosettes with his lambs at his first attempt at exhibiting.

The traditional Cumbrian sports were well contested, including the Cumberland and Westmorland Wrestling and the fell race up Coniston Old Man. The six-mile fell race was won by Dylan Lewis, of Sarn Helen running club in Wales.
