A RECENT report has hailed the success of a £35m transformation of a South Cumbrian highway.

Research conducted by Highways England has revealed a number major benefits produced by the A590 High Newton to Low Newton bypass near Grange-over-sands.

The study shows that the dual carriageway, that was completed in 2008, has resulted in a huge drop in commuters travelling through the villages and has reduced journey times by three minutes in rush hour.

It has also contributed to an 80 per cent reduction in collisions, down to just one a year instead of five.

Graham Dakin, construction programme manager at Highways England, said:“We are delighted at the performance of the new bypass since it opened in 2008.

"There has been a massive drop in accidents and commuters and other road users have benefitted from faster and more reliable journey times."
