A ROAD in Dalton has been closed after a pothole developed and people have started to post selfies of themselves near it on social media.

Hollygate Road has been closed in both directions by Cumbria County Council because of the hole in the road.

A spokesman for Cumbria County Council said: “The council has put in place a temporary road closure on Hollygate Road, between Olive Close and Devoke Water Gardens, for safety reasons in order to protect the public after we were made aware of a large pothole on this section of road.

"We believe the pothole may have been caused by water seeping under the road surface and will be carrying out repairs shortly. The road is currently closed to all vehicles but access for pedestrians will be maintained.”

On Tuesday August 25 Barrow Police (@barrowpolice) tweeted "Report of a hole having developed in Hollygate Road Dalton. Avoid if possible. #police looking into it."
