CASUALTIES of a Dalton car smash were rushed to hospital and roads were closed for five hours following the incident.

Five people were involved in the two vehicle crash which happened at 10.50am on Wednesday between Long Lane and Newton Road, in Dalton.

A blue Volkswagen Passat, driven by a 58-year-old local man, was in collision with a black Mercedes E220, driven by a 61-year-old man.

Three fire engines raced to the scene and used cutting equipment to free casualties.

Motorists and pedestrians were asked to avoid the area and use alternative routes.

Although both drivers, and the three passengers from the Mercedes, were taken to Furness General Hospital hospital for treatment, none suffered serious injuries and all were soon discharged.

The road was closed for a time following the collision to allow police investigations and for recovery of the vehicles by Furness Cars and Commercials.

Lee Cargan, of Newton Road, Dalton, said: "I just heard a loud bang but I didn't see anything. Definitely heard it though, I was up a ladder at the time. It really surprised me and the position of the car."

Dave Taylor, of Cobden Street, Dalton, said: "I use this road everyday to go to work.

"There should be a stop sign instead of the give way sign at the junction. Young drivers and even wagons come down that road, but they will not stop. Something needs to be done about it."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Barrow police on 101.
