BARROW'S first colour run was a roaring success as it raised over £6,000 from just entry fees.

The main event at the family fun weekend in Barrow Park attracted more than 450 people.

Some wearing curly wigs and some wearing tiaras but one thing they all had in common was being covered in brightly coloured powdered paint.

The event was organised by Tesco Extra in Barrow and was held at 12pm today in Barrow Park.

Nathaniel Welham, community champion for Tesco Extra helped pull the event together.

He said: "I am ecstatic with the turn out, I was originally worried because it was a very slow up take but it definitely picked up as the closing date for registration got nearer.

"This is the best fundraiser we have ever put on."

Mr Welham was so pleased with the reaction from the community that he will be organising a second colour run in May.

He said: "I am hoping for the start to be on Abbey Road next year and there will also be a few different charities that we would like to raise money for."

To mark the start of the colour run the Barrow Mayor, Ann Thomson, released a mass of powdered paint from a fire extinguisher as the participants began the 5k course.

One of the participants was mother-of-two Andrea Parker-Edwards who is fighting breast, lung and brain cancer.

She completed the course in a mobility scooter with the support of her family and friends.

They all wore tiaras and sashes with the name 'Team Princess Warrior'.

She said: "There's about 30 people running the course with me today.

"One of my friends has even come all the way from Wakefield to be here. This was something we signed up to straight away because we wanted to raise money for charity."

There were also people supporting Team Jake which is in memory of five-year-old Jake Ellis who lost his battle with cancer in 2008.

Lauren Dixon was running with her seven-year-old daughter, Evie and Laurie Goulding was running with her seven-year-old son, Isaac.

Mrs Dixon said: "We are friends with Jo-ann Ellis and even though she isn't running the Colour Run today she is here supporting us all.

"I think a colour run in Barrow is a great idea, I mean just look at the turn out from the community - it's amazing."

The event was sponsored by a number of local businesses including Liberata, enterprise, Best One and Furness Building Society.

Participants taking part were not expected to raise money as the £20 registration fee each person pays is being donated to St Mary's Hospice, British Heart Foundation, Diabetes UK, MIND and SAFA.
