LONG-AWAITED improvements to a dangerous stretch of the A590 could finally be set to go ahead.

The section earmarked for work is between Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway and Lane Ends junction.

The problem stretch poses particular issues for motorists making right turns onto the A590.

Changing the road layout and installing a new foot and cycle bridge are among the options Highways England is hoping to explore.

A public exhibition and drop-in day later this month will display proposals for work and ask motorists, cyclists, residents and other road users for their views.

Highways officials say that improving “the connectivity” of the Haverthwaite communities separated by the trunk road is another key aim of the project.

Many residents and visitors say they find the junction at the railway station and the following turn-off from Backbarrow difficult to use – especially when turning right – and some drive miles round to avoid the junctions.

Fast-moving traffic also makes it difficult for people to cross the road, and for buses to pull in and back out again.

South Lakes MP Tim Farron has urged as many people as possible to get involved. The Westmorland and Lonsdale MP and Liberal Democrat leader has long-campaigned for safety improvements to the A590.

He said: “I am urging people to go along and make their views known.

“The A590 divides our communities in an area of increasing local housing and tourist attractions.

“The speed and volume of traffic on the road creates considerable hazards particularly for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles that have to access the local villages and hamlets.

“I hope that we are another step closer in our long running campaign to improve safety on the A590.”

Local district and county councillor Sue Sanderson has been among those working with parish councils, residents and Highways England.

She said: “Many local residents have told me they find it difficult to use this junction, and that traffic travels too fast.

“Some people even drive all the way up Brow Edge and back down to avoid it.

“Hopefully these proposals will improve the junction for everyone, but I’m keen that local residents see the plans for themselves and have their say.”

Jonathan Reade, Highways England asset development manager, said: “We acknowledge local people’s concerns about the safety of crossing this particular stretch of the A590.

“Over the last couple of years we have been working with local parish, district and county councillors to look at the issue in detail and come up with some ideas for solutions.”

“We urge anyone with an interest in the issue to come to talk to us at this month’s drop-in session.”

The exhibition will take place on Tuesday September 15 at Outback Hall, Haverthwaite, between 2.30pm and 7pm.
