Lookin Good Feelin Great are a Furness-based group that consists of around 25 women - all of whom are battling different types of cancer.

The Lake District Farmers Armstrong Charitable Trust awards £1,000 every month to a good cause in the area - an initiative that was set up in the memory of late Lake District Farmers boss Ray Armstrong.

Gail Plant, from Barrow, is one of the women from Lookin Good Feelin Great that was formed in April.

She said: "We're absolutely honoured to be awarded this grant. It's unbelievable and overwhelming.

"We're a group of women who have got together and unfortunately all met because of our cancers.

"The support we get from each other is irreplaceable and we're there for each other 24 hours a day."

The group are hoping to put the grant towards printing cost for their calendar, as well as creating networking events for cancer sufferers.

They have already raised £13,000 for the oncology department at Furness General Hospital within seven months of existence, and highly value the work of medical staff.

Wendy Smith, another member of the group, paid tribute to the generosity of the town.

"We thank the general public of Barrow, because without them, I don't think this group would have been possible.

"They've been so kind and had loads of support. If we've had cake sales, they'd put a tenner in the bucket and not buy a cake.

"Even people who don't seem to have any money have contributed and given us their last few pennies." . Mrs Plant added: "We want anyone who wants to join us to contact us immediately."
