SEVEN crashes on a dangerous bend on the A590 in Cumbria has led to safety improvements being carried out.

Highways England has now completed the £50,000 project on the A590 just outside Ulverston between Arrad Foot and Greenodd Roundabout after seven crashes in five years on a bend in the road.

New signs and white lines along the eastbound carriageway have been provided after a series of accidents involving drivers losing control on a bend in the road.

Highways England project manager Peter Gee said: “The new arrangements give drivers better warning of the road layout and should improve safety on this stretch of the A590.

“We recently carried out a safety review of this section of the A590 and it revealed that 6 out of the 7 personal injury accidents over the last 5 years were due to drivers losing control of their vehicle on a bend.

“We’re urging drivers to take notice of the new signs and road markings to make sure they stay safe.”

Elsewhere along the A590, around Gilpin Bridge, Highways England is delivering £30,000 of improvements for pedestrians and cyclists in a 5 day scheme starting on Monday.

The existing cycle track between Raven’s Lodge and the A5074 will benefit from an upgrade and repairs. Signage for cyclists on the local roads network – designed to keep cyclists on local roads and away from the busy A590 – is also being provided along sections of the A590 between Lindale and High Newton and Brettargh Holt and Levens.

A further cycling improvement scheme is taking place between Newby Bridge and Ayside. Highways England said none of the work will affect drivers’ journeys.
