VOLUNTEERS from the RNLI’s Barrow Station launched their all weather lifeboat ‘Grace Dixon’ last night to go to the assistance of a 20 foot power boat with engine problems.
The initial call came at 5pm from HM Coastguard to the effect that the vessel with two persons aboard had reported having a broken down engine one half mile south of Walney Lighthouse.
At the time the tide was ebbing having been at its peak at 2.54pm at a height of 8.8 metres.
The weather was said to be fine with good visibility and a slight sea state. The lifeboat launched at 5.30pm with five crew aboard, under the command of 2nd Coxswain Jonny Long, and on arrival at the scene they were informed that the fault had been diagnosed as a faulty fuel pump and repairs had been effected.
Both vessels then began to make way towards Ferry Pitching, with the lifeboat standing by in case the fault reoccurred.
Once the casualty vessel was considered to be in a safe position in Walney Channel and no further problem had occurred with the engine, the lifeboat resumed and made her way back to station where she was rehoused at 6.50pm.
