FURNESS coastguard were called out to assist police with a reported crashed hand glider.

The incident occured between Rampside and Aldingham at 12.46pm yesterday.

A coastguard rescue officer arrived on scene but soon discovered that the hand glider was a balloon attatched to an inflatable Spider Man.

Following the false alarm, and several jokes between the rest of the team, the vehicle was washed down ready for the next call out.

A Furness Coastguard spokesman, said: "As far as the initial reports from the 'eyewitness', the police and coastguard followed their own emergency protocols to arrive on scene as quickly as possible due to the tide rising very quickly.

"Due to the visibility, and how far it was off the coast, it was quite easily misinterpreted as a person on a hand glider. We thank the person for calling this in, as it was only until we went out and stood next to it you could see what it actually was."
