FURNESS residents are entitled to feel lucky after The Evening Mail got lotto fever and gave away free tickets.

The giveaway came as people in the UK wait to see who has won a jackpot of nearly £60m, the largest in lottery history.

The rollover jackpot of an estimated £57.8m must be won in the national lottery draw tonight.

Because the jackpot has now exceeded £50m, if no-one matches all six main numbers, the prize money is shared out between those who have the most winning numbers.

The Evening Mail yesterday took to the streets of Barrow to give away free lotto tickets for the event to shoppers and residents.

One resident who took part, Darren Hartshorn, said he doesn’t know what he would spend that amount of money on but would like to give some to charity.

He said: “It’s difficult to say what I would do with that sort of money, but I would like to give some to charity.”

Another resident, Grace Kelly, said she would use the money to travel to the other side of the world.

She said: “I would definitely sort out at least a big holiday, I would like to go to Australia.”

Another who claimed a lucky ticket, Maggie Clark, said that she would like to invest if she won the jackpot. She said: “I’d like to buy a house, and then look to invest in it. Whether that’s doing it up or selling it on.”

Camelot, which operates The National Lottery, said that for Wednesday’s draw of £50.4m, they were selling around 200 tickets per second in the hour before sales were closed at 7.30pm that night.

According to the Sunday Times  Rich List 2015, winning this jackpot would see someone rival some of the biggest stars in world music, including Chris Martin and each member of Coldplay who are worth £52m, Ed Sheeran (£20m) and Ellie Goulding (£13m).
