A FORMER floating Barrow nightclub and restaurant has reached its final resting place but its future still hangs in the balance.

Reports in a Danish newspaper say the Princess Selandia is to be scrapped rather than turned into a museum, as had at one point been suggested.

The boat left Buccleuch Dock – which was home to the carrier for almost 10 years – earlier this month.

In 2004, she was bought by Barrow entrepreneur and nightclub owner, Mr Lucas, who transformed the industry carrier into a popular restaurant and nightclub.

For the past five years, the ship has been lying dormant in Buccleuch Dock, behind Morrisons, before she was bought back by the Danes.

Mr Lucas said: “There was always that possibility that it could be scrapped. I was told it was going back to be a museum. We will just have to wait and see.”

A Danish newspaper reported that after lengthy negotiations the ship finally was anchored in Frederikshavn at the end of last week after sailing the Great Belt route between Nyborg and Korsor.

Norla Rasmussen, co-owner of the company Jatob which bought the ferry, told the newspaper he had brought the vessel from England to scrap it. He said: “It’s a great day for us, now that the ferry finally arrived home.”

Chairman of the Ship Preservation Trust, Sven Irgens-Moller said it was a shame that it was to be scrapped but added that it would be very costly to maintain such a large ship and they just didn’t have that kind of money.
