Firefighters were called to a house in Cedar Road, Barrow yesterday after a lamp that was left on a bed set on fire.

Fire engines from Barrow, Ulverston and Broughton attended the scene and found the owner of the house already outside.

He had returned to the property after being out and found that there was a fire in one of the bedrooms.

He called 999 straight away.

Mark Ducie, watch manager at Barrow fire station was one of the crew members that attended the incident.

He said: "We investigated the fire and we found that it was an accidental bedroom fire with a lamp that had been left on the bed switched on.

"The door was shut and it was a very slow burning fire that caused extensive damage to the bedroom."

The crew used two breathing apparatus, one hose reel jet and positive pressure ventilation to deal with the incident.

Mr Ducie said: "When the occupier came back to the property he went to investigate it and realised there was a fire in the bedroom.

"Thankfully he had had some fire safety advice and didn't open the door. He then contacted us and left the property."

Two smoke alarms were found to be fitted, one of which was not working, so crews also completed a home safety assessment.

Fortunately nobody was injured.

Mr Ducie said: "We do really encourage people to have a fitted, working smoke alarm that is tested weekly.

"They can contact Barrow Fire Station or Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service to arrange a home safety check free of charge.

"Fitted and working smoke alarms not only alert the occupier of the property very early on but can also alert your neighbours so it's a two fold approach."
