POLICE are investigating reports about the occupants of a van seen acting suspiciously, which some residents fear is a threat to their pets.

People have been posting on social media warning pet owners about the dark blue Transit van.

The people in the van are said to be knocking on doors on housing estates asking homeowners if they want to buy fish.

The men are then alleged to be using chalk to put marks on the households which have dogs living there, with many homeowners fearing they will return to steal the animals.

Cumbria police stress that at this stage they do not have any hard evidence to confirm dogs are being taken, other than reports from people who have spotted the van.

However, officers are appealing for people to come forward with any information which will help with the investigation.

They have also posted messages on the Cumbria police Facebook page, with the post being shared more than 1,000 times by people in Barrow, Millom and across the county.

Sergeant Louise Tall said: “We have been made aware of interest on social media this week regarding a blue Transit van acting suspiciously in west Cumbria.

“There has been speculation on social media that this van is involved in criminal activity involving animals.

“We would urge the public to come forward and report any suspicious activity to the police so that we can investigate.”

Anyone with any information can call police on 101. Details can also be passed to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
