OVERNIGHT wear and tear repairs giving drivers safer, smoother journeys along the A590 in Cumbria will be taking place this week.

During work this month the eastbound carriageway will be closed for for a total of 4 nights with diversions in place.

Highways England is carrying out surface repairs along 2 separate dual carriageway sections of the eastbound A590 – at Pigwilly Wood between Brettargh Wood roundabout and the M6 and between Meathop roundabout and the junction for Witherslack.

Highways England project manager Peter Gee said:“This is essential work to tackle wear and tear along the eastbound A590 and we do need to close the dual carriageway overnight to do the work. We appreciate that these 4 nights of work at the 2 different locations will mean fairly lengthy diversions for anyone heading to the M6 and we would urge drivers to build in extra time for journeys.”

The Pigwilly Wood project, worth £74,000, will take place on Monday and Tuesday. The second project between Meathop roundabout and the junction for Witherslack will cost £56,000 and will be carried out on Monday 21 September and Tuesday 22 September.

On each of the 4 nights the eastbound carriageway will close between 8pm and 6am with clearly-signed diversions in place.

There are 2 diversion options for the Brettargh Wood to M6 eastbound closure with traffic able to join the M6 at junction 36 via the northbound A591 and A6 towards Kendal and the southbound A65. Drivers can also join the southbound M6 at junction 35 at Carnforth by joining the southbound A6 from the A590 at Levens.

During the closure of the eastbound carriageway between Meathop roundabout and the junction for Witherslack drivers heading for the M6 will need to leave the A590 at Newby Bridge - taking the northbound A592 up to Windermere and then the A591 towards Kendal and then the southbound A591, rejoining the A590 at Brettargh Holt roundabout.
