A TEENAGER was three times the drink-drive limit when he crashed his car into a wall.

Michael James Caine initially told police his mum had been driving the car before his parents turned up at the scene.

The 19-year-old, of Tudor Square, Dalton, appeared at Furness Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday where he admitted drink driving. The court heard he had 105 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The limit is 35.

Prosecutor Mr Lee Dacre said: “It was August 17 and police received a call that a car had crashed into a wall on Devonshire Road, Barrow, and a male was seen running from the scene.

“When they arrived the defendant approached them and said his mother had been driving but she had gone for help. Then his mother and father arrived and she said she hadn’t been driving. There was a lot of front end damage to the car.

“Police made checks and found the car was registered to the defendant and he admitted he had been driving it.”

Defence solicitor Mr Michael Graham said: “My client has no explanation why he decided to drive on this particular evening. He did remain at the scene and although he initially said he hadn’t been driving, he did admit it and fully co-operated with the police. He is 19 years of age and is to train as a fitter locally from mid-September. He did have some short-term work but at this time he has no income.”

Caine was banned from driving for 26 months and put under a 12-month community order. He must do 150 hours of unpaid work in the community. He was ordered to pay £85 court costs, a £60 victim surcharge and a £150 criminal court charge.
