THE Lakes Distillery has secured listings for its whisky, vodka and gin with supermarket chain Morrisons and Virgin Trains.

Its award-winning whisky, The ONE, is on sale in 43 Morrisons stores in the north west and North Yorkshire, and is available to first-class passengers on Virgin’s west coast services between London, the north west and Scotland. Morrisons is also stocking the distillery’s The Lakes Gin, while Virgin Trains is serving The Lakes Vodka.

It is just over a year since the £7m distillery at Setmurthy, near Bassenthwaite, opened to visitors.

But its first product, The ONE was launched in 2013 – a blend of malt and grain whiskies produced by other British distilleries.

Production of The Lakes Gin and The Lakes Vodka began at the end of 2014, along with the Lakes Malt Whisky.

This will officially become whisky after three years maturing in oak casks, and will be ready for drinking from spring 2018.

Stefan Kaczmarczyk, CORR fortified wine buyer at Morrisons, said: “We consistently seek to work with local producers such as The Lakes Distillery, which makes The ONE and The Lakes Gin perfect additions to our spirit range.

“Our involvement in the supply chain gives us close control over provenance, quality and freshness – we’re certainly impressed by the team at The Lakes Distillery.”

Amanda Smit,CORR head of catering at Virgin Trains added: “We’re committed to offering our customers premium products while also supporting local businesses along our route.

“We’re delighted that we’re able to do both with these superb spirits.”

Lakes Distillery Managing Director and founder Paul Currie Paul Currie, who previously founded and ran the Isle of Arran Distillery, set up the Lakes Distillery – England's largest whisky distillery – to take advantage of growing worldwide interest in malt whiskies.

He is delighted to secure the new listings.

He said: “Having such well-known respected brands eager to serve our products to their customers is a real compliment and testament to the thought and rigour that has gone into producing these quality spirits. “We try and source everything locally, whether it’s the ingredients that go into the spirits, the crafts we sell in our luxury gift shop or the food on the tables in the bistro.”

The ONE, The Lakes Gin and The Lakes Vodka all won medals in the International Wine and Spirit Competition 2015. The distillery also won the ‘tourism and hospitality’ prize at the CN Group Business Awards in October.

Its bistro, meanwhile, has made the Michelin Good Food Guide 2016 and picked up Open Table Diner’s Choice Awards several months in a row.
