The names of the dad and daughter left in a critical condition following a crash that closed one of Cumbria’s busiest roads have been revealed.

Adam Pearson, 22, and two-year-old Ava needed emergency treatment after the collision on the A66 near Cockermouth.

In the latest condition check, police said the two were in a critical but stable condition at Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary.

Their family has been keeping a bedside vigil.

Both Mr Pearson, of Broughton Moor, who works for Dearham firm Ashcroft Plant, and his daughter were airlifted to the hospital.

The BMW they were in was in collision with a United Utilities tanker, near Strawberry Howe, on Tuesday. The tanker driver, a 60-year-old man from Gosforth, was not injured.

The crash led to the closure of the A66 from the Oakhurst roundabout at Cockermouth to Dubwath, near Bassenthwaite Lake. Air ambulances were called from Langwathby, near Penrith, and Durham Tees Valley airport.

Police are asking for witnesses to call them on 101.
