Cumbria Police are investigating the sudden death of an 8-month-old girl from Carlisle.
Police were called at around 7.45pm on Friday by the ambulance service, who had been called to an address in Carlisle.
The baby was taken to Cumberland Infirmary where she sadly died.
The death is being treated as unexplained.
Specially trained officers are supporting the family, who have acknowledged tributes to the baby on social media sites.
They would politely request that people now refrain from doing this in order to enable them to grieve in private.
