THE rain and high winds failed to stop the festive folk of the Christmas capital of Furness heading out to see the annual lights switch on at the weekend.

Santa helped Dalton's Mayor councillor Wendy Maddox and her two grandchildren Erin, eight and James, 10, plus her mayoress Dorothy Ashburner to illuminate the town.

The evening kicked off with a parade from Tudor Square lead by Dalton Town Band who played carols, followed by Father Christmas and three of his reindeer.

Despite the heavens opening it didn't deter young and old from walking along with the parade and enjoying the entertainment on offer.

Male vocal cover group Threefold had the audience singing along as they belted out some pop classics much to the delights of those gathered.

Marvelous Events then provided entertainment for the youngsters in the crowd.

Once lit up the Christmas tree in Market Square the whole of Skelgate and Market Street also lit up with festive lights. A lot of effort has been put in by those living and who have businesses along the main road with garden trees and beautiful window displays.

Cllr Maddox said: "I think the weather may have put a few people off but it has still been a great turn out and I thank everyone who came along and whohave made the town look so lovely yet again."

Christmas events continue in Dalton with a special musical charity event organised by Cllr Maddox and her Mayoress. They will be hosting an evening with VOCE on Friday, December 11 from 7.30pm.

The event will take place at St Mary's Church, Dalton, and tickets are on sale now. They are available from Bedall's newsagents and Furness Building Society, both on Market Street. They can also be bought from Provincial, Duke Street , R&T Music, Dalkeith Street, both Barrow.
