TRAFFIC around Barrow town centre came to a standstill over lunch time after a bus smashed into a takeaway sign, when vehicles were diverted due to roadworks.

A Stagecoach bus shattered the electronic sign at the Water Lily takeaway while manoeuvring around the the Cavendish Street and Dalkeith Street junction.

Police cordoned off the area and directed the traffic, while the fire service, and an electricians made sure the were electrics safe and removed the remaining sign.

Vehicles have been diverted from Duke Street onto Cavendish Street as Duke Street has been partially closed due to concerns around the structural safety of Antalya, a takeaway.

Police and Cumbria Highways closed Duke Street, between Ramsden Square and Cavendish Street, on Sunday as a precaution. A police spokeswoman said investigations were being carried out on the Antalya building.

There are visual signs of cracks at Antalya, a takeaway restaurant, on the corner of Duke Street and St Vincent Street. The shop is cordoned off to pedestrians. A sign in the Antalya window says: "Due to Structural damage, sorry closed until further notice."

Other businesses situated between the road closure are open for business.

Dandy's Furniture Store and Provincial Funding said they have been taking calls from customers asking if they are open.

Dandy's has asked Cumbria Highways to put 'businesses open' sign next to the roadworks, but in the meantime Dandy's has created a home-made signs.
