A ONCE busy Barrow town centre road looks set to be shut for at least another week due to fears surrounding cracks in a building.

Duke Street in Barrow has been closed to traffic and pedestrians at its junction with St Vincent Street since Sunday August 16 due to concern that the building housing the Antalya takeaway is at risk of collapse.

Scaffolding is expected to be put up next week and only afterwards will Cumbria Council County decide if the road can reopen as normal. A council spokesman said: “We are continuing to work with Barrow Borough Council and the owner of the building on this matter.

“The owner has arranged for a specialist contractor to install structural scaffolding to support the building and this work is expected to be carried out next week.”

Neighbouring businesses are still open and buses continue to be diverted to avoid the route.
