JUNIOR doctors in Barrow will no longer take strike action as part of a national agreement.

Thousands of junior doctors throughout the UK were set to strike today over government plans to impose new working conditions upon them.

Up to 40 doctors were due to take action in Barrow today as part of the first leg of three planned strikes over the coming weeks.

Doctors were planning to peacefully protest outside Furness General Hospital and in Dalton Road and speak to members of the public to raise awareness about the disputes.

A second and third day of walkouts are planned for December 8 and December 15 with 45,000 junior doctors across the country expected to take part.

However strike action has now been suspended in order to return to negotiations.

In return, the Government has agreed to suspend its threat to impose a new contract on doctors. If the fresh round of talks break down, the BMA still has the right to hold its strikes before a deadline of January 13.

A spokesman for the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (Acas), which has been hosting the talks, said: "Following five days of productive talks under the auspices of Acas, the BMA, NHS Employers and the Department of Health have reached an agreement.

"Acas is pleased that the talks have been held in a constructive manner and cooperative spirit between the parties, that will allow an improvement in industrial relations."
