A MOTHER from Barrow has launched a website in a bid to raise £6,000 to pay for special treatment for her baby.

Rebecca Walker and her partner Kyle are hoping to raise £6,000 for a special form of treatment for their daughter Lily, who was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis when she was just two weeks old.

The life-shortening illness clogs the lungs with mucus and slowly shuts down the digestive system, meaning Lily’s life expectancy is just 40.

She has physiotherapy twice a day as well as four lots of antibiotics and two lots of vitamins each day. Rebecca, from Barrow, has set up a GoFundMe fundraising page to help her buy a physiotherapy vest, which vibrates on the chest and helps to break down mucus.

More than £1,500 has already been raised towards the £6,000 cost. The vests are not currently available on the NHS.

Speaking about six-month-old Lily’s diagnosis, Miss Walker said: “It’s really hard but we are getting there, it was a big shock at first. “She deserves only the best and that’s what I want to give her. The physiotherapy we do at the moment is quite distressing for her so the vest will make it a lot easier because she will be able to just sit with it on.

“The reaction to the GoFundMe page has been brilliant, I thought we would maybe get a couple of hundred pounds but we are really grateful to everyone who has donated so far.”

Kelsea Little, media director at GoFundMe.com, said: “Our thoughts are with Rebecca as she aims towards her goal for Lily. It’s amazing to see the support of her friends, family and community who have rallied together to donate, and we wish her all the best moving forward.”
