A 27-year-old Barrow man was locked up after he hurled abuse at police and kicked out at officers.

Steven Barker, of Weaver Green, Walney, appeared before Furness Magistrates' Court, where he admitted being drunk and disorderly.

Prosecutor Mr Lee Dacre said police first spotted the defendant when he was being ejected from the Theatre Bar, Cavendish Street, Barrow, at about 11.40pm.

He said: "Police were on duty on Cavendish Street opposite the public house.

"They saw a man being escorted from the premises by a door supervisor.

"He said that the defendant had been causing trouble inside and was being abusive."

Mr Dacre added that Barker then started swearing and shouting abuse at the police officers.

He was making rude hand gestures and was warned to stop several times but continued.

The prosecutor added: "He was then arrested and he began flailing his arms around so they had to handcuff him.

"He then continued kicking out at officers as they tried to put him in the van and again at the police station.

"As a result he had to be taken straight to a cell where he continued to kick out and make threats to the officers."

Barker pleaded guilty to the October 23 offence.

The court heard that he had no previous convictions but one caution and a fixed penalty on his file.

Defending himself he said: "I agree with what has been said and I have been trying to address issues by going to Unity.

"I want to apologise for my behaviour and it won't happen again."

Magistrates fined him £100 and told to pay a £20 victim surcharge.

He must also pay a criminal court charge of £150 and court costs of £85.

Barker said he would pay a lump sum of £150 followed by £20 per week from December 8 via a collection order.
