A DOG who was allegedly thrown from a fourth floor flat in Barrow is thought to be on the mend.

Police said they were called at 8.55am on Friday when a light brown dog was allegedly thrown from the back of a fourth floor Steamer Street flat into Island Road on Barrow Island.

The dog was due to be treated over the weekend, having suffered internal and chest injuries, and is believed to be doing well.

Stacey Lamb, who lives in the flats, said she ran down to help the animal after the incident.

Miss Lamb, 28, said: "I raced downstairs and took some blankets for the dog. The poor thing was shaking and weeing itself because it was in shock.

"I couldn't believe it was still alive but it didn't seem to be too badly injured. It's a beautiful dog, only young, maybe about two."

The alleged incident and the aftermath was witnessed by a number of children who were arriving at Barrow Island Primary School.

Miss Lamb added: "Apparently all the children were screaming in the playground."

Barrow Island Primary School deputy head, Vicky Evans, went out to see the parents and children who were still coming into school.

Miss Evans contacted Grove Vets in Rawlinson Street, Barrow who said to bring the dog straight in. It is understood that the police took the dog, called Clyde, to the vets where it was being treated.

Miss Evans said it was an upsetting incident for the children.

She said: "It was a sad scene to see. We hope the dog recovers.

"The children were fine once they knew the dog was being treated by the vets and is in good care."

- A 30-year-old man from Barrow has been arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty. He was then further arrested on suspicion of an offence under the Dangerous Dog Act. He was bailed by police later on Friday and police said the offence under the Dangerous Dog Act has been withdrawn.
