A BARROW girl has told of the horrifying moment she witnessed a dog die after a road accident.

Police are investigating after the pet, believed to be a white Staffie, was hit by a car in Greengate Street, Barrow, at around 5.45pm on Sunday.

The vehicle, which was described as a dark blue Vauxhall, hit the dog which died at the scene just a few minutes after.

Chloe Holmes, 12, of Harrison Street, Barrow, saw the incident.

She said: "The car was going pretty fast and the dog was a mess after, really bad."

Chloe said she, her brother, and a few others then took the dog into a back street and she went back home to tell her mum, who in turn called the police.

She said: "We got the dog into a back street.

"I ran round to my mum while my brother stayed with the dog and then my mum rang the police.

"The police then said for us to call the RSPCA but they didn't come for another two or three hours.

"We were stood there and then it just died in front of us. It was really bad."

Chloe's mum, Charlene, spoke of the ordeal that her son, 11-year-old Leighton, is now going through, as he saw the incident as well.

She said: "He's so incredibly shaken by it. He's not been able to sleep after what he has seen.

"He did get a good sight of the car though, he's very good with remembering his cars and which one is which."
