A BARROW care home has been put up for sale to help fund a new multi-million pound facility.

The Cumbria County Council-run Rock Lea, in Abbey Road, Barrow, is on the market on the Pugh property website for £350,000 and is one of four care homes to be replaced.

West Point House, George Basterfield House and Bevan House are also set to be replaced by the new state-of-the-art care home project – which has been delayed since the firm building it went bust.

Construction of Park View Gardens, in Risedale Road, Barrow, came to an abrupt halt at the start of March when construction contractor GB Building Solutions went into administration.

Esh Border Construction was later appointed as the new main contractor for the £7m flagship project, which will provide specialist facility for older adults and people with dementia.

There has been no visible progress on the scheme, but the county council remains hopeful the facility will be open early next year.

A spokeswoman for the council previously said Esh was presently in negotiations with contractors to take the project forward.

She said: “We are still optimistic that work will be completed in early 2016 and we are still hoping to use local contractors.”

The new £6.6m, 60-bed residential care home will provide modern care solutions for older adults – especially those with dementia.

The scheme has been developed as part of a multi-million pound improvement programme by the county council which includes investment in a wide range of choices for older adults, including receiving more help to live independently in their own homes.
