A NAME has been provided for the Memories Page picture (April 24) showing the Barrow carnival queen for 1935.

Vicki Gorman got in touch to let us know that this was her mother Marjorie Poles, later Edwards, who was he town’s first carnival queen in 1935.

A look through the picture archive has turned up two other queens who represented their communities in 1935.

We have Argentina Deganis, who was the Ulverston queen and Marjorie Wilson, who was queen for the Dalton Parade.

Barrow’s first carnival queen died at the age of 97 in 2013.

A report in the Evening Mail on August 30, 1935, said: “Miss Marjorie Poles, the 19-year-old daughter of Mr and Mrs Reg Poles, of 24 King Alfred Street, Walney, was chosen as Barrow’s first carnival queen – a choice which has been exceedingly popularly received throughout the town.

“Perfectly natural both in speech and manner, Miss Poles is a most attractive young lady and Walney people are particularly proud of her.

“She was educated at the Convent School and her father is a clerk at the shipyard where she herself is employed in a clerical capacity.”

The selection was attended by around 1,000 people.

The judging panel included Marion Everall and Joyce Young, stars of the movie The Scarlet Pimpernel, which had recently been shown at the Coliseum in Barrow.

There were 135 entries in the carnival queen contest.

The crowning ceremony was held on September 7 at Barrow Town Hall by Miss England and was accompanied by a fanfare from trumpeters of the King’s Own. The carnival queen then joined the main procession.

The 1935 parade was a huge success, raising almost £2,000.
