STEAM locomotive Scots Guardsman dashed through Millom station pulling an excursion train on Saturday afternoon - keeping alive a town transport tradition stretching back to 1850.

The first official steam-hauled service went through Millom - then called Holborn Hill - at the end of October that year.

It took special guests for a celebration at Broughton - shared with passengers travelling from Furness to meet them at the Old King's Head.

Those pioneering times and many of the railway events which have happened since then are covered in a talk to members and visitors to the Millom Local History Group this Friday.

Evening Mail Memories Page writer Bill Myers will be talking about A Ticket to Millom: A History of the Town's Passenger and Industrial Railways.

The illustrated talk starts at 7.30pm in the Methodist Church, on Queen Street, Millom. All are welcome.

Find out about the 1838 railway route planned by John Urpeth Rastrick and accidents which affected the Millom station's buildings and passengers.

There is also a description of some of the tank engines which were the workhorses of Millom Ironworks and Hodbarrow Iron Ore Mines.

You can hear about some which have survived into preservation and others which have been scrapped.
