THERE are dozens of South Cumbrian soldiers named on the Menin Gate Memorial.

Among them is the well-travelled Pte John Thomas Hemsley who had left Ulverston for a new life in Canada.

He was number 116074 with the 1st Battalion of the Canadian Mounted Rifles and died at the age of 27 on April 18 in 1916.

He was the son of Benjamin and Edith Hemsley, of 22 North Lonsdale Road, Ulverston.

Also named is Pte Douglas Finlay, number 1371, of the 2 nd Battalion of the King’s Own Royal Lancaster Regiment.

He died, aged 29, on May 8 in 1915 and was the son of Hugh and Margaret of 19 Robert Street, Barrow.

Pte John Steel, aged 28, died on July 31 in 1917.

He was number 201056 with the 1/4th Battalion of the King’s Own and was the son of Eleanor of Thwaite Head, Rusland.

Pte Joseph Whitaker was number 37901 with the 9 th Battalion of the York and Lancaster Regiment.

He died on June 9 in 1917 at the age of 27 and was the husband of Emily Whitaker, of 62 Fenton Street, Barrow.

Pte Saville Lyne was from the Dalton area and died on July 31 in 1917 at the age of 20.

He was number 52398 with the 18 th Battalion of the King’s Liverpool Regiment.

Pte Lyne was the son of George of of 15 Newton, near Dalton.

L/Cpl Hartley Richardson was number 4016 with the 20 th Hussars.

He died on November 1 in 1914 at the age of 23 and was the son of James and Elizabeth Ann Richardson, of 9 Newton Terrace, Millom.
