LOOKING across the Barrow rooftops in 1890, one of the dominant industrial buildings on the skyline was the town's steam-powered corn mill.

It was built at the start of the 1870s by a group of influential businessmen keen to bring new industries to a growing town.

The picture showing the mill is part of a remarkable group of old framed photographs showing Barrow, Walney and Ulverston which was salvaged when the White House Hotel on Abbey Road, Barrow, was demolished.

The White House is now the Prestige and Sport site for family-owned car dealers Furness Park.

The historic pictures have been kindly shared with the Memories Page by Alan Stoker, who started Furness Park 50 years ago.

The corn mill was built by William Gradwell, Barrow's "King of bricks".

The mill was later owned by Walmsley and Smith and Liverpool firm Edward Hutchinson.

It had electric lighting by 1885 and was fitted with an automatic sprinkler system to help deal with fires.

The mill closed in 1967 and was destroyed in a 1972 fire.
