MEMBERS of Broughton Ladies Guide met in the Rankin Room of the Victory Hall on October 13 with June Gibson in the Chair.

She introduced Neville Buttriss who gave his third talk on the "Adventures of a Holiday Coach Driver".

He had visited 62 cities in Europe and continued by describing trips to Holland.

Mr Buttriss enjoyed driving in that country because it was so flat but full of interest with canals, bridges, dykes and windmills and beautiful scenery especially when the bulb fields are at their best.

He admitted that one of his favourite countries and one he never tired of visiting, was Austria, renowned for its mountains and beautiful emerald green water of the lakes.

He told of a trip to Brussels from Rome on the Bullet Train, trips to Venice, and how he witnessed a planned avalanche during a visit to the Dolomites.

Paris was another destination, and he remembered an exchange trip from Kendal to France where he was to stay with a family and had fun learning how to enjoy breakfast French Style!

He was very lucky to visit Berlin both before and after the wall came down.

Every trip was full of wonderful experiences.

He finished by reading a poem which had been written by a member of the London Transport Retired Men and Women Association who often used Neville as their driver.

It was very amusing and incorporated one of Neville's famous sayings.

He would utter “It's good here, aint it!” and the reply would be “Absolutely Superb!”

Jean Day gave the warm vote of thanks saying he had kept the members amused all evening and his talk had been “Absolutely Superb!”

The competition – a drinks coaster - was won by Beryl Ashcroft with June Gibson second and Eileen Cathcart third. Eileen also won the raffle.

Apologies were received from Mary Dixon, Janice Johnson and Judith Ilett.

The next meeting is on November 10 when members will be making cards with Judith Harper. Visitors are welcome to this “crafty evening”.

Duddon and Furness Mountain Rescue and the Macmillan Nurses will benefit from a festive event being organised in Broughton.

The Broughton Ladies Guild Christmas prize bingo is being held from 7.30pm in the Victory Hall on Friday, November 25. All are welcome.
