A GRANDMOTHER who has supported an entire family as they deal with the sudden death of a much-loved woman with a “heart of gold” has received the Evening Mail’s Bouquet of the Week.

Shirley Arnold, of Keith Street, Barrow, was nominated for the Evening Mail’s special flowers following the death of her daughter, Lisa Arnold, last month. The 36-year-old was found dead in a flat in Anson Street.

Shirley was put forward for the bouquet by fellow family members, as they have praised her courage and determination in trying to keep the family together and continue as best she can.

The 55-year-old also continues to care for Lisa’s five children: Michael, eight, Tianna, 10, Chloe, 12, Robbie, 16 and Bethani, 18.

Speaking after receiving the Bouquet of the Week, Mrs Arnold said: “I was that shocked I couldn’t cry until after.

“They just felt I deserved something for being there for them. It was a lovely surprise.”

In the wake of Lisa’s death, the community rallied behind the family in their efforts to put together a fitting funeral and raise money for a headstone.

Mrs Arnold said she has been amazed by the support she has received from friends and family herself.

She said: “It has been hard. Even after the funeral we got over 50 sympathy cards. I’ve had flowers and gifts from lots of people. I just want to say thank you to everyone.”

Mrs Arnold was nominated for the bouquet by her other three daughters: Donna, 33, Amanda, 32, and Sara, 26, who described their mother as being their “rock” in the aftermath of Lisa’s death.

Amanda said: “We really want to thank our mum and dad for everything they have done – I don’t know what we would do without them.

“No matter what problems (Lisa) was going through she would always be there for you, she would just put hers aside.”
