YOU can still get a bus from Millom to Haverigg, or even to Barrow, but things are not what they used to be.

Millom man Alan Dixon now lives in Barrow but remembers the wide range of bus services which used to be available from the town.

Some of the buses which operated from Millom are shown in a selection of pictures from the Evening Mail archive, or spotted at the Tram Sunday event held in Fleetwood.

There was once direct Cumberland bus routes from Millom to Whitehaven and Ribble Motor Services could get you to Ulverston, via Broughton.

Cumberland had two depots in Millom, one in King Street and the other on the corner of Market Street and Lancashire Road – now a new cars showroom for W. Milligan and Sons.

Mr Dixon recalled that the Market Street depot had an office which would have been the base for inspectors such as Victor Horsley.

Two of his relatives work as conductors. Red painted Ribble buses would pull into a shelter between Millom Town Hall and Wadeson’s newsagents.

Sometimes the Ribble buses would bring rolls of film to be shown at the Palladium cinema and cartons of Kiora pop to be sold to movie fans.

There were several routes in Millom where buses no longer go – including one to the long demolished houses for Hodbarrow mine workers and their families at Steel Green.

There would also be Millom town services late into the evening – to at least 11pm, said Mr Dixon.
