BARROW Raiders have added former AFC strength and conditioner Paddy Maher to their backroom staff.

Maher worked under Darren Edmondson and Paul Cox at Holker Street, but parted company with the Bluebirds alongside first-team coach Alex Meechan and sports therapist Dan Anderton as part of a major reshuffle in February.

“He will bring a wealth of experience and help to make us a lot more professional,” said Raiders coach Paul Crarey.

“As the club grows with the academy and more injuries in our squad, we wanted somebody who could come in with experience and background in strength and rehab.

“In the past when players have been injured, they have been left to their own devices because we haven’t had time to look after them.

“This is a big step forward for the club. His expertise and professionalism will take us on to another level.”

In addition to his stint at Holker Street, Maher has worked with Castleford Tigers – where brother Will is part of the first team – and, more recently, Cumbria Storm.

A delighted Maher, from Haverthwaite, said: “I wanted the opportunity to be part of an up-and-coming progressive environment and, in the short time I have been here, I have found the club to be very professional.

“Up to now, it has been very rewarding. I am surprised how far they have come in such a short space of time.”

Crarey added: “Paddy is very enthusiastic, very easy to get along with and the lads are benefiting already from his expertise.”
