THE Duddon at low tide has been a short cut from Askam to Millom for centuries but today is crossed only rarely on guided walks.
In the 19th century, the crossing points were clearly marked on maps and people went across on foot, on horseback, or in a coach.
From the 1850s what was to become the Furness Railway had crossed the Duddon on a viaduct near Foxfield – providing a safer and more reliable way across the estuary.
The next talk organised by the Duddon Valley History Group will look at how the Duddon Estuary has been crossed by people since 1820.
The guest speaker is Mary Jardine and the talk is from 7.30pm on Wednesday, October 26, in the Rankin Room of Broughton Victory Hall.
