PRINCE of pace Ryan Fieldhouse cannot wait for summer to arrive so he can burn off Barrow’s League One rivals.

Supporters could be in for a treat and defences in for a hard time from the electric full-back when pitches dry and harden.

The former Halifax and Dewsbury player showed a brief glimpse of his frightening acceleration with two priceless touchdowns against Keighley Cougars as he helped clutch victory from the jaws of defeat for Barrow on Sunday.

And that was on a heavy Craven Park pitch in wet conditions as Fieldhouse proved to be unstoppable, bursting through for his brace in the second half to help his team wrap up the 18-14 win.

“The heavy ground is no good for me personally, I like a fast pitch and fast track and I can show what I can do then if the opportunity is there,” said Fieldhouse.

“I backed myself supporting and I took my chances when they came. When the grounds do even up and I get a fast track, I definitely think I have got lots more to give.”

Fieldhouse, gifted with both pace and a poacher’s instinct, added: “A strong point of my game is I like kick returns when defenders kick the ball to me and I can look up and try and spot the lazy defenders in the line and try and get my head down and get my nose through.

“I love to support and if you push you are going to get the rewards, which is what I did (on Sunday) scoring tries for the team.

“I do like poaching and I think when you push hard when other lads are tired and it massively helps the team I think you gets rewards and that’s what I like doing, I like scoring tries and like being rewarded for helping the team out as well.”

He added: “I don’t know why but my legs seem to be a lot heavier in heavy ground I guess. I thought I was blowing a little bit in patches but I got through it. As soon as the grounds firm up that’s what I really relish being on, I really love it a fast track get the ball in my hands and show people what I can do.”

Keighley appeared to have victory within their grasp in Barrow’s final pre-season friendly on Sunday having held held sway for much of the opening half, going into a quick 10-0 lead before Chris Hankinson, playing in an unaccustomed role of stand-off, went over the whitewash and then added the conversion to bring the game back to touching distance.

“The first half I thought I struggled to get going, obviously the conditions were pretty tough and Keighley threw everything they had at us,” said former BARLA Great Britain international Fieldhouse.

“We went in at half-time and Paul (Crarey) said basically we were playing dumb, but I think the score before half-time helped us a little bit, got us back in the game.

“We got on a bit of a roll and played the conditions a bit better and I think we kept hold of possession a lot more, completion was back up where we needed to be.”

Fieldhouse – one of eight new faces brought in by Raiders coach Crarey in the off season – has a new assignment in his sights, and that’s to help his side progress in the iPro Sport Cup at the expense of Rochdale Hornets who head to Cumbria in a fortnight for the first round clash.

The 26-year-old is dreaming of a great day for Barrow at Blackpool’s Summer Bash in May hoping they go all the way to the final.

“I think for Paul and other the other lads in the backroom staff that’s one of the goals, obviously we want to be up there league-wise but I think we are a good enough team to get to that final, but we will take one game at a time and see how it goes.

“We have still got lots to improve on as a team but it’s early days and we have a weekend to prepare for next week and we will look forward to hosting Rochdale at our place.”
