SIGNAL Film and Media will be showcasing two recent movies from female directors as part of an Inspiring Women campaign.

The Barrow-based cinema, in Abbey Road, will screen 2014 French drama Girlhood this Thursday, June 30, followed by last year's British hit Suffragette, on Tuesday July 12.

Girlhood, written and directed by Céline Sciamma, tells the story of a teenage girl with few real prospects joins an all-girl gang, reinventing herself and gaining a new sense of self in this intense.

This stunning third film from the female French director with a true gift for conveying the intense transition between girlhood and womanhood was a massive worldwide hit. It’s a must-see movie that established her as one of cinema’s most exciting new voices.

The film discusses and challenges conceptions of race, gender and class - Sciamma's goal was to capture the stories of black teenagers, who she claims are generally underdeveloped in French films.

The screening starts at 7.30pm, and entrance is £2.

Suffragette features Hollywood stars Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter, and Meryl Streep, among its cast.

Sarah Gavron’s critically-acclaimed film tells the powerful story of the real women in history who were willing to lose everything in their fight for human rights in early 20th Century Britain. Suffragette is written, shot and acted with a hot-blooded urgency, which reminds you that the struggle it depicts is an ongoing one.

This film starts at 5pm, and again, entrance is £2.
