THE fifth annual Energy for Life Walney Family Fun Run saw more than 350 people defy the rain to complete laps of Biggar Bank.

The 5km fun run and 10km race was another huge success for organisers the Evening Mail, and sponsors Siemens Subsea.

Evening Mail editor James Higgins said: “I have taken part in the run with my family since it first started in 2011, so it was great to be involved from the perspective of a spectator this year.

“There were so many personal triumphs on the day. It was great to see children joined by runners well into their 70s, all with personal targets to beat. And it was a pleasure to hand out medals to participants as they crossed the line, then later celebrate those who excelled in their categories.

“I look forward to 2016 – and to being a part of what has become a wonderful annual community event in the Furness calendar.”

Each person who crossed the finish line received a medal and many runners indicated they would take part again next year.

Congratulating the finishers, Barrow mayor Ann Thomson said: “The kids have been lovely coming in and everybody seems to be happy and smiley even though the weather at first was against us.

“I’m afraid I would have looked at the weather and thought I’ll stay in bed but they’re all dedicated and they’re marvellous. It’s a marvellous event for Walney.”

The event could not happen without support from the Walney Wind Cheetahs, Ulverston Wolves, the Keswick to Barrow Walk and volunteers.

Walney Wind Cheetahs run leader, Ian Jones said: “Thanks to everyone who helped in the planning, worked behind the scenes, showed up on the day to marshal and volunteer, took part in the run and attended all the sessions. Roll on next year.”
