A CONCERT was to be held on June 8 to mark the roll out of the Barrow-built nuclear submarine Astute. It would be held in the Decvonshire Dock Hall and feature the band Killer Queen.

LORD Cavendish unveiled a life-size statue of a family of badgers in the grounds of Graythwaite Manor Hotel, Grange. They piece was carved by Grange artist David Pearson.

TIM HOLT, organiser of the annual Cumbria Steam garthering at Cark, was to motor around Britain's countryside in a 1928 Lagonda with his friend Ian Stewart. The entire trip would be 4,400 miles and the top speed of the car was 60mph.

THE 30-year-old South Cumbria Musical Festival at Ulverston was honoured with a certificate of excellence by the British and Ireland Federation of Music Festivals.

A SEMI-DETACHED house in Cedar Road, Barrow, was offered for sale at £34,950. A semi in Acorn Bank, Barrow, was £49,500.

BARROW Rugby League Club directors were in talks with Barrow Borough Council over a loan of up to £150,000 to keep the club going. A loan of £60,000 had been granted in 1986 when the rugby club faced serious tax debts.
