BILL Shaw was the new community wildlife officer at the North Walney National Nature Reserve and was taking people on a guided walk to look at the range of wildlife in this unique habitat.

CRIME rates had fallen by five per cent in South Lakeland, making it the second safest place to live in the North West, behind the Ribble Valley.

THE Haverigg raft race, organised by the village inshore rescue team, was cancelled due to a lack of interest. At its peak, the annual event attracted more than 2,000 spectators.

LEONARD Redshaw joined the board of directors of Vickers Limited. He was already managing director of the Vickers Shipbuilding Group and on the board of Rolls-Royce and Associates - which worked on nuclear reactors for Barrow-built submarines.

SIX Barrow people were each fined four shillings (20p) for not having their dogs on leads. One was also fined 10 shillings (50p) for not having a dog licence.

THE contents of Winsterholme, on the Esplanade, Grange, were being sold by public auction. The lots included a Georgian mahogany dining table.

TWENTY customers were asked to empty their pockets as police staged a drugs raid at the Rothay Hotel in Grange.
