10 YEARS AGO: Animal charity the RSPCA was called out to deal with injured birds on Ulverston canal at least once a fortnight. The main reason was getting tangled up in rubbish.

50 YEARS AGO: Ulverston had a record number of 7,633 people on the electoral register - up by 271 on the previous year.

The first 15 at Vickers Rugby Union Club, Barrow, secured a third win of the season against Penrith, by 15 points to six.

A terraced house in Queen Street, Millom, was offered for sale at £600. A terraced house in Queen Street, Dalton, was £1,650.

You could dance to music from Rainbow City at Ulverston Coronation Hall. The band had been performing on Morecambe Central Pier.
