The Coniston Lodge Hotel, at Station Hill, won best small hotel in the north of England at the RAC Blue Ribbon Awards held in Pall Mall, London.

Walney Amateurs were to celebrate 50 years of musical shows with Lionel Bart's Oliver! at Forum 28, in Duke Street, Barrow. The cast included Lisa Sharrock and Bill Calvert.

James and Margaret Malone, of Gloucester Street, Barrow, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. He worked at Vickers for 40 years.

TV presenter and singing star Harry Secombe was filming at the former Coniston home of Lakeland writer John Ruskin.

You could hear music from Bradford's Len Holland at the Municipal Club in Ramsden Dock Road, Barrow. It was also hosting the final of the Miss Municipal Concert.

Bill Stickland, a pupil at the Barrow County Technical School, was to travel to Bramley to play for a Lancashire county rugby league team against Yorkshire.

Barrow boys beat a soccer team from Kirkby by four goals to one in the third round of the Lancashire Schools FA knockout contest.

A Morecambe to Barrow hovercraft service was being planned by Denny Hovercraft Limited with trials due to be held early next year. A similar service was possible from Fleetwood to Furness.
