THREE tons of rubbish was removed from open lands at St Andrews Crossing, Barrow Island, after a mass clean-up operation by a 50-strong team.

SOUTH Lakes councillors turned down plans for 10 low-cost homes on the former gas works site at Blue Hill Road, Ambleside.

A DETACHED house at Mulberry Way, Barrow, was offered for sale at £189,950. A semi-detached house at Strathaird Avenue, Walbney, was £165,000.

A NEW weather vane was being put in place at St Mary's Parish Church, Dalton. It had been made by VSEL apprentices in Barrow. Work on the church tower's leadwork was being carried out by a firm from York.

PENNINGTON Drama Group took the Dobson Shield as top prize at the Furness and Cartmel Rural Drama Festival, held in Grange. The drama group won with the Frank Vickery play Night Out.

SANDRA Brown, of Mearness Drive, Ulverston, was chosen as the town's carnival queen as a disco held in the Buffers nightclub.

TELEVISION cameras were in Ulverston as a group of German Christian Democrat Unions politicians visited Marl International and Cumbria Crystal.

MARKET traders were said to be delighted as the prospect of a new market hall and public hall, Barrow councillors were told.
