A REVISED edition of the life story of fisherman, Jack Manning has been published.

Mr Manning, from Flookburgh, brought out the first edition of It Was Better Than Working in 2010.

All 600 copies were sold in shops within a 30-mile radius of Flookburgh and now he has updated the book with some new material.

He began compiling his story in the late 1980s, spurred on by the regret of not taking notice of his grandfather’s own fishing stories.

He is the fourth generation of fisherman in his family and his son, Stephen, and grandson, Tim, followed in his footsteps.

The book shares tales of his interesting maritime life with pictures and details on the evolution of fishing practices, the incidents he has had on the bay, his love of music, and more.

The book’s title comes from the story of a fisherman who, in the economic depression of the 1920s, was slaving away all hours of the day.

He used to say: "Well it’s better than working’ – meaning at least he was his own boss.

Mr Manning has seen great changes in methods of transport through the years.

He used his last horse out on the Morecambe Bay sands in 1966 but there had been tractors in use for 10 years before that.

Copies of It Was Better Than Working are available in bookshops for £12 or from the author on 015395 58320 or by email on j.mann@live.co.uk
