TEACHERS at a Barrow school have sent children home today due to a sickness bug affecting 50 pupils. Parents of children at Barrow Island School were urged to collect their children as soon as possible to prevent the bug spreading any further around the school.

The sickness began yesterday afternoon and by lunchtime today a third of the school had been affected by the sickness and diarrhea bug.

Janet Dixon, headteacher of Barrow Island School said: "Following advice from Public Health England, I made the decision to close and deep clean the whole of the school."

The school is being thoroughly clean and will remain empty for 48 hours before another deep clean which will take place on Sunday.

Parents are advised to keep their children at home for 48 hours after the last bout of vomiting or diarrhea.

The school has apologised for any inconvenience that has been caused.

A statement from Cumbria County Council said: "The school will be closed from 12.30pm on July 3, and is due to re-open July 6.

"A sickness bug is affecting large numbers of pupils. Advice taken from public health."

The school will be open as usual on Monday morning.
