DARREN Edmondson has been so impressed by George Williams’ early impact that he is already keen to extend the right-back’s loan stay at Holker Street.

Williams joined the Bluebirds on a three-month loan deal from League One Barnsley, subsequently making his full debut in the 1-1 midweek home draw with Guiseley on August 18.

The 22-year-old boasts plenty of non-league experience, having previously plied his trade with Conference North side Worcester City.

He completed his switch from City to Barnsley last December and has made a handful of appearances for the Tykes.

Now he is doing a good job of showcasing his talent in non-league’s top flight and, at this stage, the Barrow boss intends to try and extend Williams’ loan deal when it expires in November.

Commenting on the full-back’s defensive attributes, Edmondson said: “I don’t see too many players that have given him a hard time because for his size he’s very strong and he’s got a good turn of pace over the first 10 yards.

“I have no qualms about him going forward – on the pitch and continuing to be successful for us. I would be looking to extend (his stay), if that is at all possible when his loan is up in November.

“He’s a player that we know is comfortable now at this level, to produce performances at this level.

“And that’s what you need – consistency.”

With experienced Neil Ashton continuing to operate at left-back, Edmondson added: “I think that both full-backs over the past four or five games have been very consistent in what they’ve delivered and that’s what you need.

“That’s two full-backs that can defend first and, secondly, can produce something going forward. Both have delivered that and George, for a young lad, is growing in stature all of the time.”

Williams is sure to make his 10th successive National League start when the Bluebirds host bottom club Kidderminster Harriers today (3pm kick-off).

And Edmondson, who will hold talks with Barnsley at a later date to discuss the possibility of extending the defender’s loan, has also been impressed by Williams’ attacking qualities.

“He’s a loan player that has stepped into a new level – I know he’s played in the league below and obviously played a little bit for Barnsley – and I think that over the last three or four games he’s really grown into the squad, he feels part of the team and he’s done very well,” said Edmondson.

“I think we’re seeing what he’s all about, he’s a really good athlete.

“When he’s full of confidence and going up and down the wing without negativity in his mind, he crosses an excellent football.

“That’s something we knew about him, we’d seen it first hand and we’re looking to get more from him.

“So I think there’s still more to come from George, but at the moment I’m very pleased with what he’s producing.”
