Francis Healey and Phil Patterson were anointed with a jug of ale to become Knights of Piel Island, off Barrow. The ceremony took place at the Ship Inn on the island.

More than 1,500 people went to the 700th anniversary Egremont Crab Fair in West Cumbria. Gordon Mattinson, of Aspatria, won the gurning contest.

Barrow Chamber of Trade members gave their backing to plans for a regular hovercraft service linking Blackpool, Barrow and Millom.
