Barrow Borough Council decided to press ahead with consultation on the propose demolition of 130 properties in Arthur Street.

Barrow AFC had a two-all draw with Harrogate at Holker Street in the Blue Square North League.

A terraced house at Union Street, Dalton, was offered for sale at £124,950. A terraced house at Cameron Street, Barrow Island, was £55,000.

A multi-million pound restoration project for Netwrok Rail on the Leven Viaduct, near Ulverston, won the Civil Engineering Achievement of the Year award.

A £150,000 extension to Barrow's Victoria Infant School was officially opened by town Mayor Cllr Joyce Fleet.

Barrow-based VSEL formally registered an interest in buyting one of the two naval sdockyards - Rosyth in Scotland and Devonport in Plymouth.

TV naturalist Sir David Attenborough and radio presenter Brian Redhead were at Humphrey Head, near Grange, to launch a new nature reserve.

It took more than eight hours to put out a fire at Barrow's redundant North Lonsdale Hospital.



50 YEARS AGO

Francis Healey and Phil Patterson were anointed with a jug of ale to become Knights of Piel Island, off Barrow. The ceremony took place at the Ship Inn on the island.

More than 1,500 people went to the 700th anniversary Egremont Crab Fair in West Cumbria. Gordon Mattinson, of Aspatria, won the gurning contest.

Barrow Chamber of Trade members gave their backing to plans for a regular hovercraft service linking Blackpool, Barrow and Millom.

Roose cricket captain Brian Usher collected the trophy for the North Lancashire Division II Championship from committee chairman Mr N. S. Mackay.
